I had the pleasure of capturing Michael & Kerri’s beautiful backyard wedding this past July, 2024. It was a cozy 6-hour photo + video package, and I can’t wait to share some highlights and tips for planning your own intimate backyard celebration.
Why Backyard Weddings are Becoming So Popular
Backyard weddings have been gaining traction recently, and it’s easy to see why! They’re budget-friendly, personal, and offer a sense of privacy that’s hard to match. Michael & Kerri’s celebration was attended by around 70 guests, just a short 10-minute drive from Calgary, hosted at a friend’s lovely home.
How the Day Unfolded
We started right off with the ceremony, followed by an hour for wedding party and couple portraits, as well as some b-roll footage for the highlight video. Afterward, it was time for the reception and their first dance under the open sky. Nothing over-the-top, but it was incredibly heartfelt and truly reflected who they are as a couple.

If you’re planning to have an outdoor dinner or reception, make sure to rent a tent just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. You’ll have peace of mind and can enjoy the day rain or shine.

Consider the Timing for Your Ceremony:

Backyard locations tend to have limited shaded spots. To avoid harsh lighting in your photos or videos, try to schedule your ceremony outside of midday, when the sun is directly overhead. If there are natural shaded areas, even better!

Look for Budget-Friendly Décor Options:

For smaller weddings, consider renting items like arches, décor. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace have tons of affordable rental options from local vendors.
